How to calculate CPC
Cost per click is what you pay, on average, for each ad click:
CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks
$1,200 for 800 clicks is a $1.50 average CPC. Flip the formula to plan:
- Clicks a budget buys: clicks = spend ÷ CPC. $2,000 at $2.50 per click buys 800 clicks.
- Budget for a traffic goal: spend = CPC × clicks. 1,500 clicks at $1.20 cost $1,800.
How much you can afford per click
The most useful CPC number isn't your average. It's your ceiling:
Max affordable CPC = break-even CPA × conversion rate
If a new customer is worth $40 in gross profit and 3% of clicks become customers, each click is worth $1.20. Pay more than that and every sale loses money. Our ROAS calculator works out break-even CPA and max CPC from your margin and order value.
Max CPC vs. actual CPC
In Google Ads, max CPC is your bid: the most you're willing to pay for a click. Actual CPC is what you're charged, and it's often lower. You pay roughly what's needed to keep your position above the next advertiser, which depends on their bids and both of your ad quality.
With automated bidding (Maximize Conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS) Google sets bids per auction, and you control CPC indirectly through targets and budgets.
What drives CPC
- Competition. Keywords where many advertisers chase high-value customers, such as legal, insurance or emergency home services, cost more per click.
- Quality Score. Expected CTR, ad relevance and landing page experience. Better scores can win the same position for less.
- Match types. Broad match reaches more searches, including expensive and irrelevant ones, unless you manage negatives closely.
- Time and location. Competition shifts by hour, day, season and city.
How to lower CPC
- Group keywords tightly so each ad matches its searches and Quality Score improves.
- Add negative keywords from the search terms report every week or two.
- Go more specific. Longer keywords with clear intent often cost less and convert better.
- Improve the landing page for speed and relevance.
- Adjust schedule and locations where clicks cost more without converting more.
A lower CPC only helps if the clicks still convert. Watch conversion rate and CPA alongside it.

- To customers: CPA = CPC ÷ conversion rate.
CPC FAQ
CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks. If $1,200 brought 800 clicks, the average CPC is $1.50. Flip it to plan a budget: spend = CPC × clicks you want.
The median CPC for US search campaigns was $5.42 in WordStream's 2026 benchmarks. It ranged from $1.63 in arts and entertainment to $9.87 for attorneys and legal services, with home improvement ($8.33) and dentists ($8.00) close behind. The table below lists all 23 industries.
Max CPC is the most you allow Google to charge for a click. Actual CPC is what you're charged, which is often lower: you pay roughly what's needed to hold your ad position against the advertiser below you.
Multiply your break-even cost per customer by your conversion rate. If a customer is worth $40 in gross profit and 3% of clicks convert, any click over $1.20 loses money. Our ROAS calculator works this out from your margin and order value.
Raise Quality Score with tighter keyword groups, ads that match the search and a relevant landing page. Add negative keywords to stop paying for irrelevant searches, and try more specific keywords where fewer advertisers compete.
