What moving company SEO is (and what it isn't)
Moving company SEO is the work of getting a mover into Google Maps and search results when people nearby plan a move: for «movers near me», for each service, from local moves to long distance and packing, and in each city and suburb you cover. We measure it in quote requests and booked moves. Rankings are how we get there.
Three things it is not:
- Buying leads. A bought lead goes to several movers at once. You pay for it whether you get the job or not, and next month you buy again.
- Local Services Ads. LSA is advertising with a Google badge. It stops when the budget stops. It uses the same reviews and profile that SEO builds, but it is a separate channel.
- A website with a quote form. One page with a form ranks for your company name. It says nothing about long-distance moves, packing or the suburbs you serve, so Google shows someone else for those searches.
The mechanics are the same as local SEO for service businesses: Google Business Profile, pages, listings, reviews. Local SEO for movers differs in three places: local and long-distance moves are separate markets, almost every customer is a first-time customer, and the companies at the top of the map have more reviews than in most trades.
Why SEO for movers works differently
Six things that make SEO for moving companies different from SEO for other local businesses, with the numbers behind them.
Local and long-distance moves are two markets
"Local movers" gets 60,500 searches a month in the US and a click costs $6-34. "Long distance movers near me" gets 27,100, and a click costs $25-100. The customers, the job size and the competitors are different, so each needs its own page and its own plan. Of the 32 top-3 mover websites we checked, 25 have a separate long-distance page. If you move people across state lines, show your USDOT number on it.Almost every customer is new
People move once every few years, so there are few repeat jobs and you need new customers every month. With ads and bought leads, the cost of each one stays the same. With SEO it falls, because the monthly fee is fixed while calls grow. Our SEO ROI calculator shows the difference with your own job value and close rate. You are probably renting your leads
Movers search for "moving leads" and "moving leads providers" hundreds of times a month. A bought lead is usually sold to several companies, and the first to call back wins. You pay for the ones you lose too. A customer who finds your listing on the map has not sent the same request to other movers. They call you.The top 3 has more reviews than in most trades
Movers in the Maps top 3 have a median of 1,627 Google reviews, against 618 for those in positions 4-8. For pest control, the same check gave 1,070. Reviews alone do not decide the order: in 19 of 20 cities, a mover with more reviews sat below the top 3. You need new reviews after every move and a complete profile. Check your Google Business Profile in a minute.Chains hold about a quarter of the map
National chains took 16 of 60 top-3 spots in our check, and All My Sons alone took 12 of them. In the same cities, pest control chains took 6. Local and regional movers still held 44 spots and first place in 14 of 20 cities. A chain branch is one profile with one address, and it can be outranked in the neighborhoods closer to you.Customers are afraid of a bad mover
People hand a moving crew everything they own, and they check before they call: license, insurance, how the estimate works, what happens if something breaks, and reviews with details. Put all of it on the site and in the profile. It turns more visitors into quote requests, and reviews that describe the job help the profile rank.
What your customers are searching for
Monthly searches in the United States. The price in brackets is what movers pay Google Ads for one click on that search - traffic an organic ranking brings in without a per-click charge. Long-distance searches cost about three times more per click than local ones.

What's included
Google Business Profile setup and optimization
Category, services, service area, hours and photos of your trucks and crews. Both "Mover" and "Moving and storage service" appear in the top 3, so we pick the one that matches what you sell and build the rest of the profile around it.
A page for every service you sell
Local moves, long distance, packing, storage, office and commercial, pianos and other specialty items. Each page has how the job is priced, what is included, what is insured and photos from real moves.
City and service-area pages
A landing page for each office's Google profile and for the suburbs you want jobs from. In our 20-city check, 31 of 60 top-3 movers send Maps visitors to a city page instead of the homepage.
Citations and listings, audited and cleaned
Name, address and phone made consistent across Yelp, the BBB, Angi, Apple Maps, Bing and moving directories. Duplicates removed, old addresses and tracking numbers from lead vendors cleaned out.
Review requests after every move
A text with a direct review link sent the evening of the move, plus one line for the crew lead to say before leaving. Reviews that name the service and the neighborhood help you rank for both.
Technical SEO and a fast quote form
A site that loads fast on a phone, a call button on every screen, a quote form short enough to finish in a minute, clean indexing and LocalBusiness schema. Fixed in the code, not handed over as a report.
SEO vs Google Ads vs bought moving leads
Most movers fill the calendar with bought leads and Google Ads. Both work, and both cost the same next month as this month. The four channels differ in what you pay for, how fast they start and what you keep when the money stops:
| SEO | Google Ads | Local Services Ads | Bought leads | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | A fixed monthly fee for the work | Every click: $9-40 on «movers near me», $25-100 on long-distance searches | Every lead | Every lead, often sold to several movers |
| How fast it starts | 3-6 months to noticeable growth | Same day | After Google verifies the business | Same day |
| When you stop paying | Pages and rankings stay | Calls stop that day | Calls stop that day | Calls stop that day |
| What you keep | Pages, reviews, Maps position | Campaign data | Reviews in the LSA profile | Nothing |
Where each one fits
Bought moving leads fill a slow week. The same request usually goes to several movers, the first one to call back gets the job, and all of them pay. Count what you spend per booked move, and the number is much higher than the price of one lead.
Google Ads for moving companies bring calls the same day, and they show within weeks which services and zip codes turn into booked moves. The price does not fall with time. A click on «moving quotes» costs $24-62, and the next one costs the same. If you need jobs before the pages rank, we run Google Ads management next to SEO and move the budget as organic calls grow.
Moving company SEO costs the same in month twelve as in month one, while the calls it brings keep growing. A customer who finds you on the map calls you alone. Of everything in moving company marketing, it is the slowest channel to start and the only one that still works after you stop paying.
How we collected the Maps numbers
On October 7, 2026 we searched «moving company» in Google Maps from the center of 20 US cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, Jacksonville, Austin, Charlotte, Columbus, Indianapolis, Seattle, Denver, Nashville, Atlanta, Miami and Las Vegas. We recorded the first 8 results in each city without sponsored listings, 160 in total, and checked 32 websites of companies in the top 3. We counted All My Sons, Two Men and a Truck, College Hunks and Bellhop as national chains. One search point per city is a snapshot: a customer across town sees a different top 3. How it works and how long it takes
Moving company SEO shows first movement in 6-10 weeks and noticeable growth in 3-6 months. Service and city pages rank first; the city-wide «moving company» search takes longest. These timelines come from our local SEO work for home-service companies. For a Chicago handyman company, organic clicks went from 31 in February 2026 to 192 in August.
Summer is the busy season for most movers. Pages published in spring are in position when it starts; pages published in July are not.
Audit (weeks 1-2)
We check your Google Business Profile, website, listings and reviews, and map who holds the top 3 for "moving company" and "movers near me" across your service area. You get a short list of fixes in priority order and a page plan that starts with your most profitable services.
Foundation (month 1)
Profile rebuilt, listings made consistent, duplicates removed, review requests set up after every move, and technical problems on the site fixed: speed, indexing, the quote form, the call button, schema. Every page we add later ranks faster because of this month.
Service and city pages (months 2-4)
Pages for the services with the most expensive clicks first - long distance and full service - then local moving, packing and storage, then the cities and suburbs you cover. Each has pricing, what is included and photos from real jobs. Calls from search start to grow here.
Reviews and authority (ongoing)
A reply to every review, weekly posts on your profile, links from realtors, apartment communities, storage facilities and local press, and a monthly report built on calls, quote requests and Maps rankings across your area.
