- Missing required property “author”.
- Missing required property “reviewRating”.
- Missing required property “itemReviewed”. Nest the review inside the item instead, or name the item here.
- Missing recommended property “reviewRating.bestRating”. Without it Google assumes a 1–5 scale.
- Missing recommended property “datePublished”.
How to use the review schema generator
- Choose the markup: One review for a review written by one person or publication, Rating summary for the average of many ratings.
- Say what is reviewed: the item type and its name. Products, apps, courses, books and events are the common cases.
- Enter the rating and the scale. Without a best and worst rating, Google assumes 1 to 5.
- For one review, add the reviewer and the date; for a summary, the number of ratings.
- Copy the code to the page that shows the review, then check it in our schema markup validator.
What Google requires
| Markup | Required | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
Review | author with a name, itemReviewed with a name, reviewRating.ratingValue | datePublished, bestRating, worstRating |
AggregateRating | itemReviewed with a name, ratingValue, ratingCount or reviewCount | bestRating, worstRating |
When the review sits inside the item's own markup, for example a Product with a nested review, itemReviewed is left out: the parent is the reviewed item. This generator builds standalone markup, so it always names the item.
The self-serving rule
This rule removes the most stars. Google shows review stars for a LocalBusiness or Organization only on sites that review other businesses, such as a directory or a review site. If the business controls the reviews about itself, its markup is not eligible, and that includes:
- testimonials on your own website;
- Google or Yelp reviews embedded through a widget;
- a rating summary in your footer.
The markup isn't penalized; Google just shows no stars. For a local business, ratings appear where they count already: your Google Business Profile in Maps and the local pack. The live check above warns as soon as you pick a LocalBusiness or Organization.
Products are different. Ratings that customers left for a product on your store can carry stars, as long as they come from real customers and are visible on the page.
Which items can have stars
Google supports review snippets for: Book, Course, CreativeWorkSeason, CreativeWorkSeries, Episode, Event, Game, HowTo, LocalBusiness, MediaObject, Movie, MusicPlaylist, MusicRecording, Organization, Product, Recipe and SoftwareApplication. Reviews of anything else, such as a service with no business attached or a person, don't get a snippet.
Common mistakes
- Ratings that aren't on the page. The rating and the reviews behind it must be visible to readers.
- A rating outside the scale, like 9 out of the default 5. Set
bestRatingwhen you use a 10-point scale. - A summary without a count.
AggregateRatingneedsratingCountorreviewCount. - Ratings compiled by editors for local businesses. Google requires local business ratings to come directly from users, not to be created or curated by people on your team.
- The reviewer field holding a sentence such as “Verified buyer from Ohio”. Put only a name.
Review Schema FAQ
Not in a way Google will show. Review and rating markup on a LocalBusiness or Organization is eligible only on sites that review other businesses. Reviews a business publishes about itself, including ones pulled in from a review widget, are self-serving and get no stars. Your Google Business Profile reviews already show in Maps and the local pack.
Google lists these types: Book, Course, CreativeWorkSeason, CreativeWorkSeries, Episode, Event, Game, HowTo, LocalBusiness, MediaObject, Movie, MusicPlaylist, MusicRecording, Organization, Product, Recipe and SoftwareApplication. LocalBusiness and Organization carry the self-serving limit above.
A Review is one person's or one publication's review, with an author and a rating, such as an editorial product test. An AggregateRating is the average of many ratings, with a count. Use the one that matches what the page shows.
Yes. The rating and the reviews behind it must be visible to readers on the same page. Markup for ratings that only exist in the code breaks Google's guidelines.
